Before forming Toto its members were session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals, Crofts[4and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs and Sonny and Cher. Five guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's vocalist.
About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an alternative producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck was brought in and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a couple of years. However, the group resumed touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to the band's best form and the tour that went with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both joined the group.
