About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the world.
After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and make a new album using the new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
